While it is true that we publish erotic romance, and we are very proud of the erotic romance titles we have released we also publish titles that would generally not be considered erotic as they do not use the graphic language and do not have the strong focus on the sexual that are often considered earmarks of erotic romance. We have long believed that the story should dominate whether a book is considered erotic or sweet but we understand that readers are comfortable with different levels of sexuality in the books they read and so we have established lines to make it easier for readers to find the books that match the sexuality level they are comfortable with. Though we are maybe best known for our erotic titles we're very proud of titles like Fool Me Once by Jessica Joy which is published in our Amorous Adventures line which features romantic suspense stories. Fool Me Once is a sweet romance which does not include graphic language. Though the tension between hero and heroine sizzles the focus of the story is the romantic relationship between the hero and heroine. Lovemaking does not occur until late in the book and when it does occur it is described romantically rather than graphically. We're also proud of books likeContract Bride by Ayn Amorelli and the Studs for Hire series by Sherry James. These books might be considered erotic by some, but would not be considered erotic by others. The sexual tension in these books, published in our Sensuous Journeys line, sizzles. There is a stronger focus on the sexual attraction between hero and heroine. The couple within books in the Sensuous Journeys line tend to make love frequently and the love scenes are described fully but with an eye toward combining the emotional impact of lovemaking with the description of the physical activity so that the overall reading of the love scenes is that they are hot but romantic. The focus is on the romance...the emotion...the relationship between the characters and not so much on the precise travels of various body parts. Though we do not forbid authors from using slang words for male and female body parts in this line very graphic language is usually not in keeping with the characters themselves. The focus of the books in our Sensuous Journeys line is on the emotion...the romance. Books in our Forbidden Experiences line would be considered erotic by most everyone, though we still strive for books with a strong romantic focus. In the Forbidden Experiences line the sexual relationship between hero and heroine is a stronger focus, though we still demand that the sex scenes have a strong emotional component. The difference between our Forbidden Experiences line and our Sensuous Journeys line would likely be the characters. Characters in the Forbidden Experiences line are typically sexually curious, sexually experienced, sexually adventurous. They have an open and down to earth outlook on sexual activity. They are not squeamish about the words they use to describe body parts and physical activities. However, this is not to say that the characters in the line all use four letter words beginning in F to describe lovemaking. We do not in general condone the use of graphic language just for the sake of making a book seem more erotic. It is our opinion that books are erotic because of the relationship between the characters and the sexual adventurousness of the characters, not because the book is peppered with the f word. Though we are perhaps best known for our erotic romance we also publish wonderful books that are not erotic. We suggest readers looking for less erotic romances check out our Amorous Adventures, Tender Destinations and Sensuous Journeys lines. It’s my pleasure to announce the release of Studs for Hire: Woman in Charge, the second book in the Studs for Hire series. It is available in both ebook and paperback. This, the second book in the series, focuses on another of the women who teamed up to create Studs for Hire, a home repair and contracting company which supplies hot plumbers, electricians, and carpenters to women who want a hot man to fix their pipes or sizzle their electrical systems. In this funny, hot, romance Casey Burrows lands the task of hiring sexy architect Alex Roy for a job he is quite sure he doesn’t want. Alex is used to building classy timber frame homes for elite clients and Casey wants to hire him to design a shrine to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll for an eccentric widow. Alex is sure the job will ruin his reputation with the timber frame clients he really wants and he wants no part of it, but he needs the paycheck. Casey has a great career, a great house, a new car, and a nice dog. All she needs is a man who will love her. When she meets Alex she is determined to keep their relationship strictly business, but Alex is a bit too hot to handle and Casey soon finds herself wondering if she is ready to risk her heart once again. That’s because I’ve been super busy remodeling the Black Velvet Seductions website to make it better for readers and authors. If you read the blog through RSS feeds and haven’t visited the site in a long time, now is a great time to stop by and see all the additions. Probably the best addition to the site is the addition of longer excerpts of every book we publish. Most books now have the first 3 chapters excerpted on the site. Some of our longer anthologies have many more chapters. The Crimson Z has 12 chapters of excerpts available for readers to read free. Another great addition to the Black Velvet Seductions website is the new “Contest Corner” where authors can list their contests (free) and readers can check out the contests and enter those that they are interested in. Be sure to check out Black Velvet Seductions every Friday give away. The way that the contest works is that every Friday I draw names from the subscriber list of the Black Velvet Seductions free readers newsletter and give away books, ebooks, bookbags, pens, mugs, mousepads, calendars, and other goodies to our newsletter subscribers. Subscribing to the free readers newsletter is all that is necessary to be included in each Friday’s drawing. Click here to subscribe. We’ve added a lot of great things for romance writers as well. Any romance author with a book that is currently available in either print or ebook can have the book listed by author name and sub-genre on newly developed (and developing) pages of our site where we list books by authors not necessarily published by Black Velvet Seductions. Since the authors are allowed a 1 sentence blurb for the book it is a great place for readers to browse for new books that might interest them. I know I have already found quite a few books that have piqued my interest and that have been added to my personal to be purchased list. Authors are also invited to list their chats, and book signings on the Black Velvet Seductions calendar. Writing groups, RWA chapters, and authors offering workshops are invited to list their workshops and conferences on the Black Velvet Seductions calendar as well. Readers who would like to receive freebies from Black Velvet Seductions and Black Velvet Seductions authors should visit Freebies Central and sign up to receive periodic gifts from Black Velvet Seductions. I would love to hear your thoughts on the new upgrades to the site. What do you like? What do you dislike? What would you like us to add during the next round of upgrades? I wanted to share my personal opinion about that subject. As an author, my concerns about rating systems for books are manyfold. As in the film industry, who exactly would be doing the ratings and what criteria would they be using for those ratings? Who decides what is acceptable and what is not? The film industry has suffered artistically due to the predetermined rating system. Many wonderful films are never seen or heard of because they didn't pass the rating system standards set arbitrarily by a small group of people. An NC-17 rating for a movie is the kiss of death...it will never have mass distribution or promotion and ends up dying a slow death in the bargain bins of "straight to DVD" releases. Many of our most treasured, ground-breaking films would never have been released under the current rating system standards...Midnight Cowboy, Last Tango in Paris, Lolita...to name a few. Unfortunately, rating systems not only inform, they force artists to conform to whatever the prevailing social norm might be. They can rapidly become a form of censorship that must be complied with in order to acheive a marketable rating. I prefer disclaimers as to the content of the book. If I am looking for a novel that holds explicit scenes, I want to know that the book I am picking up will not disappoint and visa versa. Although erotic details are often meant to titallate, they also enlighten. We fear that which we do not understand. Reading a book that contains fetish scenes, for instance, does not make one a fetishist, but it can often inform the reader and impart a greater understanding and acceptance of lifestyles that are removed from the mainstream. So even romance novels can be vehicles to break down predjudices--and aren't there enough predjudices in the world already. No matter what the sexual content, I want to read books that speak to the human experience and stories that are poignant and meaningful. In order to find those, I sometimes have to wade through not-so-great literature, but I would rather do that than risk censorship of our beloved written material. I was always more into science fiction than I was anything else and that's what I always picked up at the library and store. Of course, I'm a dyed in the wool trekker and that just added to the mindset. Several years ago, however, I got involved with something called role play. Now for anyone who has never done it...role play is telling a story or writing one with more than one person. If I'm writing a story and I think...well, my character is going to go home from the store now, put everything away and get ready for that hot date tonight, then that's the upcoming action as far as I'm concerned. However in a role play scenario, my partner might say that there was a car accident on the way home, just a minor one and as I exited the slightly damaged vehicle to confront the cause of the accident, he mugged me or kidnapped me! Then there goes MY idea of a quiet time before a hot date! Role play makes you think and keeps you on your toes! It was through this role play that I started thinking about writing again, something I hadn't really been able to do because of my life situation. Hubby has been disabled for many years and for a long time I had to work at two jobs and didn't have the time to do what I had longed to do forever...write! When circumstances dictated that I retire and stay home with him to deal with his deteriorating health, I really sat down to write and not long afterward found a publisher that wanted to epublish my first book. God!!! What a feeling that was!! Finally, after all the years I dreamed of it...it was a reality! The basis for that first book came from ideas generated by an old role play and I took that first little idea and ran with it! When it came time for the second book with that publisher, I had used a kernel of an idea from another role play. There were problems with the first publisher though, so I changed publishers and found Black Velvet Seductions. I sent Laurie another novella I had done involving contemporary characters instead of fantasy ones and she liked it...kinda! LOL I had a lot of edits to do on that one and "Bound by Fate" is the result. I think I've learned somewhat from that experience. Well I thought I had, but when I see what I have to do on the new story for the next "Crimson Z" I have to wonder if I learned anything at all! The second book from the old publisher is in the queue for Laurie to read over and edit for a real book and I hope against hope that it's not as much of a rewrite. The very first book, a fantasy about a giant of a man and his little virgin love is still in the process of rewrite and I wonder that it was ever published in the first place. There is so much to be improved! One day soon I will actually be caught up in rewrites and will be able to move back to my evil dom book! I have a quirky job and they are really great there! If i'm not actually busy with the work I have to do, they don't care if I sit in my cubby and read or knit or work on my writing, so I carry a notebook or two with me all the time and work on stories between tasks on the computer. The notebooks are filling up with parts of stories, poems and little snatches of clever things to add to stories at some point. Well, at least I think they are clever at the time I write them, we will have to see what the characters think when they are actually inserted into stories. There are many times when the characters don't like what I've written and I have to change it...like Cloud has said, they have minds of their own and aren't afraid to express them. Well, I suppose it's time to wake hubby and make his breakfast, I'm babysitting today and the phone is ringing...are you there yet? Sounds like the kids from the backseat of the car when they were little, doesn't it? Stephen King said that sometimes they come back...I say sometimes they never really grow up!
